How to untether Jailbreak Your Apple device Running iOS 5 with Redsn0w (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)

The good guys over at iPhone Dev team along with some (a lot) of help from pod2g, have just released the latest version of Redsn0w. The updated Redsn0w 0.9.10b5 will now allow the iPhone 4 GSM and CDMA, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch, and the first generation iPad, to perform an untethered Jailbreak while running Apple’s latest mobile operating system, iOS 5.

Redsn0w 0.9.10b5 is only capable of Jailbreaking non A5-based devices, Click on this link if you want to learn how to jailbreak the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 running the A5 chip.

Your Apple device will also have to be updated to iOS 5.0.1 to take advantage of this version of Redsn0w.

This tutorial is only for people that don’t care about saving their basebands! If you have an iPhone running on a network other then what the iPhone is supposed to be running on, STAY AWAY! If you don’t care about preserving basebands then proceed and follow these step-by-step instructions or skip on down and view the how-to video, to jailbreak your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, and iPod Touch.

*Please be aware that Jailbreaking your Apple device may void your warranty, so proceed with caution and at your own risk. Nothing bad will most likely happen to your device but it must be noted.

Make sure to have the latest version of iTunes 10.5 or later and iOS 5.0.1 on your Apple device. You can check by going to Settings - --> General - --> About - --> Version, your Apple device should read 5.0.1.

Step 1: Download Redsn0w 0.9.10b5 for Windows or Redsn0w 0.9.10b5 for Mac, from the links provided and save the application in a folder named "Redsn0w" on your desktop.

Step 2: Double click the Redsn0w .zip file and extract the application. Launch the Redsn0w application.

Step 3: After launching Redsn0w, click on the Jailbreak button.

(Windows 7 users should run the exe in Windows XP compatibility mode by right-clicking on the Redsn0w exe and select Properties, then select the Compatibility tab and select Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP). Windows XP and Windows 7 users should run Redsn0w as ‘Administrator’ (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select 'Run as an Administrator').

Step 4: Plug your Apple device into your computer and turn it OFF. Click on the 'Next' button, to move on to the next screen.

Step 5: You will now need to put your Apple device into the DFU mode. Redsn0w will take you through the necessary steps:
  1. Hold the Power button on iPhone for 3 seconds
  2. Now simultaneously hold the Home button and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds
  3. Now release the Power button but keep the Home button pressed until Redsn0w detects the device

Step 6: Your Apple device should now reboot now. (It is now safe to release the Home button.)

Step 7: Redsn0w will now start preparing the jailbreak data.

Step 8: Make sure Cydia is selected and select 'Next' to continue.

Step 9: Your Apple device will be rebooted and Redsn0w will start uploading the new RAM disk and kernel.

Step 10: Once the jailbreaking process is complete, Click on the 'Finish' button to exit the application.

Step 11: Your Apple device will reboot once again (which could take approximately 5 minutes). After it has rebooted, Redsn0w should have successfully jailbroken your Apple device. You should now find the Cydia jailbreak app on your Apple device home screen.
