Amazon getting into the tablet business, will try and undercut Apples iPad (UPDATE)

Amazon will be the latest company to try and take on Apple’s iPad. Many have already failed at this, but Amazon seem to have the right idea for customers looking for the iPad alternative.

Instead of Amazon jumping into the tablet business and just throwing something out to stores, just for the sake of making money, Amazon is learning from other companies such as Apple’s very successful iPad and the not so successful HP TouchPad.

Amazon will not build their own operating system for these new tablets. Instead they will be using the OS of Apple’s closest competition, Google’s Android. The tablets will also have a whole Amazon ecosystem added to the Android OS, just like Apple has done with the iPad and iTunes. Amazon will add deep integration of several Amazon services such as the Amazon Appstore, the Kindle eBook store, Amazon’s Cloud Drive service and most likely many more services will be added.

Another thing Amazon has kept a close eye on, is price. With tablet companies not having a well organized ecosystem to compete with the Apple’s iPad, tablet makers can’t price their tablet to match Apple’s price range. One good example is HP and the TouchPad. Because of the lack of apps and the price being to high, HP wasn’t selling tablet like they thought they were. Once HP scraped the tablet business and slashed its prices to $99 to get them out of stock, those tablets were selling like hotcakes. Amazon seems to have taken note on this and has stated that they will have very aggressive pricing, in order to be successful in the tablet space.

Amazon is said to have two tablets in the works. One will be an entry level duel-core tablet the “Coyote” and the second tablet will be the more high-end, quad-core tablet known as “Hollywood”. Amazon is said to launch its first Android tablet in September or October.

Do you think Amazon is taking the right approach with selling tablets? Should Amazon even bother selling tablets since Apple seems to be the only one advancing in the tablet space?
